Boarder-X World Tour with Vicky Jamieson
Victoria Jamieson, or Vicky as everyone calls her, is Britain's only hope - only competitor, in fact - on the Boarder-X World Tour. She discovered a love of sliding down things fast, aged seven, when her family lived in Abu Dhabi. Q. 1) At 18, she started skiing down mountains in Canada and took up snowboarding there, Q. 3) winning many competitions by the age of 23. Q. 2) While she was competing at a snowboarding competition in Switzerland she was asked why she started the sport. 'Ive always liked all kind of sports, especially skiing, and it seemed natural to start snowboarding. Q. 4) It doesn't take long to learn and you can become really good in a few months.'
Being an independent representative of your country at Boarder-X does not entail a James Bond-like chalet lifestyle. Jamieson has no coach, yet she trains like a maniac, both on the mountain and off. In winter she snowboards in the mountains everyday from 8.30 a.m. until 4 p.m., and also runs and goes biking. Q. 5) She does it because she loves doing it. She loves the competition and being in the mountains. Q. 6) But free‐riding, that's doing what you want when you're not in a competition, is the best thing in the world for her.
When asked what was important when learning, she replied, Q. 7) 'You can learn quickly but you need lessons. Q. 8) It's also important to have the right clothes so you don't get wet because, to begin with, you spend a lot of time falling down. Last year, Jamieson was twelfth in the world. This year, there is no reason to think she shouldn't make the Top 10.
