TO SWIM - SWIMMING


Theory:

TO SWIM refers only to the action of swimming, but SWIMMING can refer to the action and the concept.
EXAMPLE:
I like TO SWIM in the morning.( I physically get in the water and swim.)
I like SWIMMING in the morning. (I physically get in the water and swim.)
I like watching SWIMMING on television. ( I don't get in the water, because what I enjoy is the sport of SWIMMING, a noun, not the verb TO SWIM.)

Some verbs only accept the form TO SWIM.
EXAMPLE:
I want TO SWIM.
I want SWIMMING is incorrect.

Some verbs only accept the form SWIMMING.
EXAMPLE:
I enjoy SWIMMING.
I enjoy TO SWIM is incorrect.

Some verbs accept both forms.
EXAMPLE:
I like TO SWIM.
I like SWIMMING.

These constructions are common in transformation exercises.
