SILENT LETTER WORDS

Theory

The easiest way to understand how to pronounce many words in English is to learn to recognise silent letters, because there are many.

The most common silent letters are:
B as in lamB
C as in sCissors
D as in sanDwich
E as in dovE
G as in Gnome
H as in scHool
K as in Knife
N as in autumN
P as in receiPt
T as in casTle
U as in gUitar
W as in sWord

There are often good reasons for letters to be silent, and they often have an effect on the sound of other letters.
Example:
In the words HAT and HATE, the E is silent, but it changes the word dramatically in sound and meaning.
