IE AND EI WORDS

Theory

Many words in English have either an IE or an EI combination.
These combinations can have an E sound as in FEET or an A sound as in DAY.
It can be confusing to know whether a word is an IE or EI word.

There are some memory aids that can be used to help, but there are some words that don't follow the rules.

A memory aid for IE words is as follows:
I before E except after C when the sound is EEEE
Example:
FIELD.

A memory aid for EI words is as follows:
E before I is always the way, when the sound is AY.
Example:
EIGHT.
