PARTS OF SPEECH

Theory

All the words in English are not the same kinds of words.
Some are things and names, some are describing words, some are action words and some are joining words.
These different kinds of words are called PARTS OF SPEECH.

There are 8 PARTS OF SPEECH:
NOUNS, which are names, things or places, like DOG.
ADJECTIVES, which describe nounS, like BIG.
VERBS, which are action words, like PLAY.
ADVERBS, which describe verbs, like QUICKLY.
PRONOUNS, which replace nouns, like HE.
PREPOSITIONS, which say where or when, like UNDER.
CONJUNCTIONS, which join parts of sentences together, like AND.
ARTICLES, which identify nouns, like THE,

There is also another group of words called CONTRACTIONS, but they are not parts of speech. They are made when two words are combined to make a shorter word, like CAN and NOT to give CAN'T.
