THE PAST, THE PRESENT AND THE FUTURE 4

Theory:

THE PAST - PAST PERFECT

If the PAST ACTION CONTINUES INTO THE PRESENT, then it is different from the past simple, and is called the PRESENT PERFECT.

If it stops at a fixed point in the past, then it is the PAST PERFECT.
For example:
I start playing tennis at 7:00.
I keep on playing tennis until 9:00.
I see Maria at 9:00.
It is now 10:00 and I am talking to you. I say:
When I saw Maria, I HAD BEEN PLAYING tennis for 2 hours.

Everything about the PAST PERFECT is exactly the same as the PRESENT PERFECT except for two things:
PRESENT PERFECT uses HAVE and PAST PERFECT uses HAD.
PRESENT PERFECT has to INCLUDE NOW and the PAST PERFECT CANNOT INCLUDE NOW, it uses a defined moment in the past as the reference.

The PAST PERFECT SIMPLE uses HAD and the PAST PARTICIPLE.
For example:
When my wife came in I had eaten 5 biscuits. (EATEN - PAST PARTICIPLE of eat)

The PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS uses HAD + TO BE + ING.
For example:
When my wife came in, I had been sleeping for 2 hours. (BEEN - verb TO BE)
