EVEN - EVEN THOUGH, ALTHOUGH, DESPITE, IN SPITE OF
Theory:
The key word EVEN is used to construct the linking term EVEN THOUGH, which is used to show contrast.
So, if it was raining you would not normally have fun.
If however you do have fun, this is in contrast to what is expected,
so you could say:
We had fun EVEN THOUGH it was raining.
When EVEN THOUGH is used, it is necessary to use a subject and a verb.
EXAMPLE: EVEN THOUGH my brother studied, he failed his exam.
After EVEN THOUGH,
the subject is MY BROTHER,
and the verb is STUDIED,
and the contrast shown is between STUDIED but FAILED the exam.
There are other similar words that are used to link contrasting ideas,
like ALTHOUGH and DESPITE and IN SPITE OF.
They have very similar functions but their application is a little different.
After DESPITE and IN SPITE OF, a noun is used.
EXAMPLE: DESPITE THE RAIN, they played the game.
IN SPITE OF THE RAIN, they played the game
The noun is THEY.
ALTHOUGH and EVEN THOUGH are followed by a subject and a verb.
EXAMPLE: ALTHOUGH IT RAINED, they played the game.
EVEN THOUGH IT RAINED they played the game.
The subject is THEY and the verb is PLAYED.
These four are commonly used for transformations.
EXAMPLE:
Given EVEN THOUGH IT RAINED, THEY PLAYED THE GAME.
This is transformed into
IN SPITE OF THE RAIN, THEY PLAYED THE GAME.
Or, DESPITE THE RAIN, THEY PLAYED THE GAME.
Given DESPITE THE RAIN THEY PLAYED THE GAME.
This is transformed into:
EVEN THOUGH IT RAINED THEY PLAYED THE GAME.
Or, ALTHOUGH IT RAINED THEY PLAYED THE GAME.
